Ikea, But Make it Fancy

Updated: Sep 18, 2020

Since staying home was mandatory this spring, I took the time to bring my old Ikea furniture back to life. With the help of curbside paint pick-up and the power of amazon, I took two $40 Ikea nightstands and made them look, well...like they cost more than $40.

Behold the beautifully simple "Rast" dresser from Ikea. It's great for small spaces and even better for small budgets. For a more minimalist approach, you could simply leave it in pine...and that would be just fine. However, if you're like me and found yourself running out of things to paint during quarantine, then you can take this unemotional chest of drawers and turn it into the Belle of the ball. Or at least a more exciting piece of furniture to look at.

The concept for my bedroom was simple. I wanted a relaxed, hotel-like feel without the risk of being too generic. "Extra-white" paint from sherwin-williams covered the buttercream colored walls, while black switch plate covers added a dramatic contrast. With white walls and a black linen head board, I needed the furniture to standout. I landed on the color "unusual gray" or as I call it, "light gray blue-green."

After applying the very unusual "unusual gray" paint, I paired gold pulls (thanks amazon) and some white and gold accessories to bring the look home. Because I had so much left over paint, I decide to be bold and paint the Hemnes dresser I had at the foot of the bed. I debated buying all new furniture, but after seeing the final result of this project, I'm glad all I bought was paint.
